Trojan girls last remaining team

The postseason came to a crashing end for all remaining teams except the Hillsboro girls, who made it to a second round game and then defeated Remington 37-31 Tuesday night to advance into the sub-state championship game Friday at Berean Academy.

The fifth-seeded Trojans will be playing against the No. 1 seed Moundridge.

“I thought we were sharp on both ends of the floor and were able to control the game from the start,” coach Micah Ratzlaff said after the game Tuesday.

The score was 17-17 at halftime, but the Trojans turned it up in the second half to close out the game.

Hillsboro boys

The Trojan boys lost their first-round game 64-35 Friday to Berean Academy.

“We fought hard against a talented and disciplined team,” coach Kyle Kroeker said.

Koehn Janzen scored 17 points, Braxton Hiebert had 12, and Brayson Amstutz had 4.

“During the season, the team showed great growth,” Kroeker said, “and we were able to grow in many different ways that didn’t always show on the scoreboard.

“The teams grit and willingness to grind through the adversity showed the character of this team. Never did they give up or struggle to bring their best and we look forward to building on this year’s growth.”

Marion boys

The Warrior boys lost 56-43 to Conway Springs in the first round of the postseason.

“This season came to an end faster than we wanted it to, but that doesn’t take away how proud I am of this group,” coach Kevin Dasenbrock said.

Carson Krause scored 15 points, Jymer Raymer scored 11, and Jackson Howard scored 6.

“Every coach knows Year 2 of a culture change is the hardest year, and these boys came together as a unit and got better,” Dasenbrock said. “These first two years here were about laying a foundation to build off of in the coming years. These boys helped do that.

“As you can see, from last season to this one we got better record-wise and competed in more games. Every single kid got better not only at the game but their IQ of the game grew as well.

“Marion Warrior boys’ basketball has a bright future, and I am just thankful I get to be a part of it with them.”

Marion girls

The Warrior girls ended their season with a 49-9 loss Thursday to Inman.

“The ending is always hard, but as I have reflected a little bit over the last couple days about our group this season and what we were able to accomplish as a team, I am extremely proud of them,” coach Jason Hett said. “This group came ready to be coached and worked hard each day with great attitudes and made my job enjoyable from Day 1.

“It didn’t always look pretty, but they battled and played some gritty basketball all season, and we are going to miss our two seniors, Hailey Harshman and Shaliah Ensley. They led the right way and are leaving a legacy for our younger ones to follow.

“I can’t thank them enough for what they have meant to our program these past four years.”

The Warriors finished the season 13-10.

Goessel girls

The Bluebird girls lost 91-38 to Troy in the second round of the post season Monday.

“Coming into the season, we were a very young group with very little varsity experience, and this group has exceeded my expectations,” coach Ryan Hoopes said.

Mackenzie Voth led the Bluebirds with 15 points followed by Jenna Flaming and Jayley Schmidt , each with 6.

“When we lost our leading scorer to a knee injury in our first game back after Christmas, these girls stepped up big time,” Hoopes said. “I was curious how our scoring would work out with her out, but we got increased scoring from almost everyone. Our lone senior, Haley Rosfeld, has played a key role for us offensively, hitting some timely shots in several games. With all but one senior back next year, the future is bright for this group.”

Goessel ended with a 15-7 record.

Peabody-Burns boys

The Warriors were five points away from upsetting the third seed Elyria Christian in the second round of the post season on Saturday but ended up losing, 60-56.

The score was even closer — 27-26 at halftime — and Peabody-Burns fought every second until the final buzzer sounded, but the effort was not enough to forestall elimination.

Peabody-Burns girls

After winning their second game of the season last week to advance into the second round of the post season, the Peabody-Burns girls lost 57-6 Monday to Central Christian.

“We earned a hard-fought 31-26 win over Marmaton Valley last week and credit to the Marmaton team for doing a great job of taking away our top shooter, Winfrey, and forcing us to find other ways to score,” coach Linsey Foth said.

Last week, Brooklyn Whiteside led with 14 points, and Journey Needham pulled down 12 rebounds.

“The girls battled for every possession and fought hard for that win, I am really proud of this group and the way they continued to compete,” Foth said.
