Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
MAY 19
6:26 a.m. — A 67-year-old woman with chest pains at Hilltop Manor in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion.
6:44 p.m. — A power line arcing across a driveway in the 100 block of W. Main St. in Marion was rendered safe by Marion firefighters and city workers.
9:37 a.m. — An unresponsive man, approximately 80 years old, being evaluated for cardiopulmonary resuscitation at Bethesda Home in Goessel was monitored by Goessel first responders for eight minutes until Hillsboro ambulance arrived and took him on an emergency basis to NMC Health, Newton. An ambulance supervisor also went to NMC at 11:49 a.m. to help the medics who transferred the patient. The ambulance remained out of service for several hours and was replaced by a backup ambulance.
1:20 p.m. — A fire alarm on K-158 south of Lehigh was determined by Lehigh firefighters to be a false alarm.
MAY 20
8:32 a.m. — A fire alarm at Hillsboro Industries was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been caused by a broken pipe leading to a fire sprinkler in a restroom.
10:16 a.m. — A 77-year-old man was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa Hospital, Wichita.
11:20 a.m. — A 45-year-old woman with high blood sugar was transferred by a backup ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.
1:10 p.m. — A person whose finger was slammed in a safe door in the 100 block of S. Berry St. in Lost Springs was checked by Tampa ambulance attendants but decided to go to a hospital by private vehicle instead of the ambulance.
5:54 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman having trouble getting up at a home on County Rd. in Tampa was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Tampa ambulance
6:41 p.m. — A 97-year-old woman who fell at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
8:53 p.m. — A 55-year-old woman with leg pain at Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
THURSDAY
12:46 p.m. — An 89-year-old man, weak, in pain, with trouble breathing, and vomiting at a home in the 500 block of Columbus St. in Tampa was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance.
6:09 p.m. — What appeared to be the same patient, now diagnosed with respiratory failure, was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to St. Teresa.
7:37 p.m. — A 40-year-old man suffering a seizure at Westview Manor in Peabody was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance. A supervisor in a backup ambulance also responded.
9:17 p.m. — Returning from Wichita, Marion ambulance was redirected back to St. Luke to transfer an unspecified patient to NMC Health.
9:35 p.m. — Fire in a pile of ashes at Nighthawk and 190th Rds. was determined by Marion firefighters to have been the remnants of a controlled burn earlier in the day.
11:36 p.m. — An 87-year-old woman with colitis was transferred by a backup ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
FRIDAY
10:21 a.m. — Marion and Hillsboro ambulances, Tampa firefighters, and a sole Tampa ambulance attendant as a first responder were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident at 360th and Limestone Rds. Marion ambulance and Tampa firefighters later were told to stand down. Three people involved in the accident declined to be taken to a hospital.
10:54 p.m. — A 58-year-old woman with back pain at a home in the 500 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the woman.
SATURDAY
1 p.m. — A 67-year-old woman who fell in the 300 block of N. Poplar St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
2:07 p.m. — A 79-year-old man who fell down stairs and hit his head in the 200 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
9:18 p.m. — McPherson County dispatchers sent Goessel firefighters to a medical call in the 400 block of E. Marion St. in Goessel. Marion County dispatchers followed up and instead dispatched Hillsboro ambulance and a Goessel first responder for a 90-year-old woman with a broken blood vessel. She opted to go to a hospital by private vehicle instead of the ambulance.
SUNDAY
8:24 p.m. — Two backup ambulances were dispatched to stand by during motorcycle races in Florence.
9:36 a.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm in the 100 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.
11:20 a.m. — One of the backup ambulances examined a person who suffered unspecified injuries at the races, but the person declined to be taken to a hospital.
11:52 a.m. — Another person approached the backup ambulance to be examined but also declined to be taken to a hospital.
12:43 p.m. — A fire alarm at Westview Manor in Peabody was determined by Peabody firefighters to be a false alarm.
1:03 p.m. — After repeated pages, Marion firefighters were dispatched for flames and smoke spotted by a law enforcement officer on Echo Ln. or near 170th and Ridgeway Dr. at Marion County Park and Lake. The fire was extinguished within 40 minutes.
1:12 p.m. — A backup ambulance responded to a wreck at the Florence race and took an unspecified patient to NMC Health.
1:18 p.m. — A 16-year-old with abrasions on his back and a broken ankle was taken from the Florence race to St. Francis by private transport. Marion ambulance was assigned to Florence to fill in while the backup ambulance was gone.
1:43 p.m. — A child who passed out and another person who injured a hand were treated by medics at a race aid station. They declined to be taken to a hospital.
2:07 p.m. — Another person who walked up to a backup ambulance was examined but declined to be taken to a hospital.
2:21 p.m. — Medics responded to two other injuries at the Florence race. One declined to be taken to a hospital. The other, with severe deformation of an elbow, was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance, which earlier had been sent back to Marion but was recalled along with Hillsboro ambulance to stand by near Florence. A lone medic in Tampa ambulance and an additional medic added to his crew were ordered to stand by in Hillsboro in case of additional calls.
2:27 p.m. — A sparking power pole at Juniper and Ash Sts. in Hillsboro was monitored by Hillsboro firefighters until a city crew arrived.
2:47 p.m. — Medics in Florence responded to another injury.
3:14 p.m. — Another patient at the motorcycle race was examined by medics but opted to go to a hospital by private vehicle instead of an ambulance.
8:06 p.m. — A 98-year-old man with high blood pressure and back pain at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
9:02 p.m. — An 18-year-old female and a 53-year-old man drifting in and out of consciousness after an all-terrain vehicle crashed near Florence’s ball field were taken to Wesley by Marion ambulance.
9:21 p.m. — A driver bleeding after a car/deer accident blocking traffic on US-56/77 near 360th Rd. was taken to an unspecified hospital by a Dickinson County ambulance. Tampa ambulance, Lincolnville and Herington first responders, and Lost Springs firefighters also were dispatched. Afterward, Tampa ambulance stood by in Marion until the ambulances that went to Wesley returned.
MEMORIAL DAY
3:52 p.m. — A 97-year-old woman complaining of chest pains at Parkside Homes nursing home in Hillsboro was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.
9:47 p.m. — A 73-year-old man needing surgery was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.
10:35 p.m. — A 46-year-old woman with stomach cramps after falling at a home in the 600 block of S. Washington St. in Washington declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
